We are pleased to announce that Linguistics PhD candidate Martine Gallardo is a recipient of the 2026 SLCL Dissertation Completion Fellowship.
These fellowships provide advanced doctoral students with an academic year of support to complete their dissertations. Martine received this award for his dissertation research on "Dominant Language Transfer vs. Bilingual Restructuring in Heritage Bilinguals," under the direction of Dr. Silvina Montrul. According to Martine, his dissertation adopts a bilingual perspective on heritage speakers of Spanish and Korean to examine the role of influence from English as compared to effects which derive from bilingualism per se, and whether the observed outcome is a function of structural similarities between the dominant and heritage language.
Recipients of this award are chosen based on the quality of their dissertation proposal; the feasibility of the project; the potential of the project to advance the field of study in which it is proposed and make an original and significant contribution to it; the nominee’s overall academic record and potential for scholarly achievement; and prior fellowship support.
Congratulations to Martine!
