We are pleased to announce that Linguistics PhD candidates Huiying Cai and Joshua Dees are recipients of the 2025 SLCL Dissertation Completion Fellowship. 

These fellowships provide advanced doctoral students with an academic year of support to complete their dissertations.  Joshua Dees has received this award for his dissertation research on "A Study of (D)efiniteness and (T)emporality in Dholuo" under the direction of Dr. Aida Talić.  Huiying Cai has received this award for her dissertation research "Exploring a Feature-Based Explainable Automated Essay Scoring System for Local L2 Integrated Argumentative Writing Assessment" under the direction of Dr.  Xun Yan.  

Recipients of this award are chosen based on the quality of their dissertation proposal; the feasibility of the project; the potential of the project to advance the field of study in which it is proposed and make an original and significant contribution to it; the nominee’s overall academic record and potential for scholarly achievement; and prior fellowship support.
