The University of Illinois just hosted the 29th Mid-Continental Phonetics and Phonology Conference (MidPhon 29)!  The Mid-Continental Phonetics and Phonology Conference is an annual meeting that brings together phonetics and phonology researchers from the Midwestern region of the United States. The annual academic conference took place on October 4th – 5th and attracted over 115 registered attendees. 

 

MidPhon 29 hosted 20 competitive talks and 28 posters with research shared from both student and faculty researchers from all over the Midwest. 

The successful conference finished off with a celebratory conference dinner at Big Grove Tavern on Saturday October 5th.

Several of UIUC's own students and faculty presented their work at MidPhon 29. These include:

 

  •  Josh Dees (PhD Student, Linguistics) who presented his talk: A CBP account of mismatches in stress assignment and palatal harmony across Turkic; 
  • Aida Talić (Assistant Professor, Linguistics) presented her talk: Local Dislocation and prosodic structure building in truncated infinitives; 
  • Scott Nelson (Instructor, Linguistics) who presented his talk: [Coronal] is Never Underspecified in English: a Computational View; 
  • Maialen Casquete de la Puente (PhD Student, Spanish & Portuguese) who presented her talk: Eastern Andalusian Spanish laxing and harmony: triggers and targets; 
  • Izaro Bedialauneta Txurruka (PhD Student, Spanish & Portuguese) and José Ignacio Hualde (Professor, Linguistics; Spanish & Portuguese) who presented their poster: The perception of lexical stress in Spanish
  • Ryan Corrigan (PhD Student, Linguistics) who presented his poster: English Liquid Error Detection of Japanese Speakers using Dynamic Time Warping with Open Boundary Conditions
