This semester, many students from the UIUC Linguistics department presented their research at conferences near and far.  Let’s take the time to congratulate each of them for their dedication to their work and their excellent representation of our department!

In August, Cory Lemke presented the talk Heritage Language Learning for International Adoptees: Insights from Psycholinguistics GOAL Korea in Seoul, South Korea.

In September, Anna Stephanov presented her talk Formalizing the Venetian "Evanescent" /l/: A Three Perspective Analysis at the Annual Meeting on Phonology (AMP).   Eleanor Sand presented her poster Negative Concord in L2 Russian at the 20th Annual Meeting of the Slavic Linguistics Society.

In October, the Midwest Association of Language Testers Conference took place and several UIUC graduate students gave presentations. Xinyi Ma presented Reconsidering Local Dependence in C-tests and Cloze Tests: Implications for Psychometric Analysis and Scoring Approaches. Yulin Pan and Huiying Cai presented Validating Elicited Imitation with Eye Tracking Data.

At the Mid-Continental Phonetics and Phonology Conference, Anna Stephanov presented the talk  Lateral Lenition and Phonologization: The 'Evanescent' /l/ in Estense Veneto . Cory Lemke also gave the talk First Language Retention in International Adoptees at the Arizona Linguistic Conference 18.

In November, UIUC students presented at the 50th annual Boston University Conference on Language Development (BUCLD).  Paul de Nijs presented his poster, Effects of grammatical feature dissimilarities on the comprehension of relative clauses in adolescent Spanish heritage speakers. Additionally, Eleanor Sand presented her poster, Negative Concord in L2 Russian. 

Morgan Chinski presented the poster Effects of Time Pressure and Memory Systems on Second/Additional Language Learning  at Psychonomic Society. 

In December, Anna Stephanov presented the talk Formalizing the Venetian "Evanescent" /l/: A Three Perspective Analysis at Going Romance 2025.

We are also looking forward to graduate students presenting at conferences next semester. 

Sibel Arikoglu will present her poster Beyond the Name: As a Symbol of Gender, Class, and Modernity in Turkey  at the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) 2026 Annual Meeting in January,

At the Symposium About Language and Society, Austin  (SALSA in January), Saman Jamshidi will present his talk At the Margins of Marginality: Chronotopes, Third Space, and the Politics of Silence in the Diaspora. Sibel Arikoglu will also present a talk entitled From Name to Insult: Enregisterment in Turkish Digital Culture at SALSA.

At the HK Global Fellows Colloquium in February, Cory Lemke will present the talk First Language Retention in International Adoptees.
