Farewell:

This Spring, we are sadly bidding farewell to Kevin Wamalwa, who has done wonderful work in the Swahili program.

We are also bidding farewell to Professor Peter Lasersohn, who has served twenty-nine years in this department.
The following excerpt is taken from James Yoon's tribute to Dr. Lasersohn that was given at the awards ceremony.

Lasersohn’s scholarship can be characterized as deep, transformative and consequential. He tackles big, theoretical questions, works on them for years and publishes impactful research. When Peter Lasersohn speaks and publishes, the field listens ...

Though he is leaving us, his clock-like punctuality, the even keel and steadfastness with which he approached all spheres of his professional life will likely continue, and for that we are thankful.

Congratulations on your retirement, Peter!

This Spring also marks the end of Professor James Yoon's tenure as department head, where he has served for fifteen years. The following excerpt is taken from Tania Ionin's message to Dr. Yoon that was given at the awards ceremony.

I would like to thank [James] for his leadership and for his mentorship.  I have worked with James in department administration for over a decade now, and I know how deeply he cares about the needs of everyone in the department – graduate students, specialized faculty, junior faculty, staff...No issue is too small to warrant his attention.

James is truly invested in everyone and everything in our department; he has been the leader of our department not for the sake of being a leader, but for the sake of the department and the people in it – and that makes the best kind of leader.
