
We are pleased to announce that Dr. John Levis, who received a MATESL degree as well as a PhD in Educational Psychology from UIUC, has been named Distinguished Professor at Iowa State University.
John has led a distinguished career since receiving his PhD in 1996. In his current work as a Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESL, John studies studies second language pronunciation and speech intelligibility, with a focus on how second language pronunciation research affects the teaching of pronunciation. His recent publications include the books Intelligibility, Oral Communication, and the Teaching of Pronunciation (Cambridge, 2018) and Teaching Pronunciation with Confidence: A Resource Book for Teachers and Learners (2024).
In his career, John also founded the annual Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching conference and is the founding editor of the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation. He served as editor and co-editor for numerous publications and directs the Iowa State Undergraduate Linguistics Program.
