EPT Registration for Undergraduate Students

Students taking a test

International undergraduate students whose TOEFL total scores are 103 (TOEFL iBT) or above (or total score of 7.5 or above on IELTS)  AND TOEFL speaking and writing sub scores are 25 or above (7 or above on IELTS speaking and writing) are exempt from taking the EPT.

Note that you do not have to take the EPT if you have transferred credit for RHET 105 or if you have fulfilled your Composition I requirement via any of the following criteria:

  1. Transferred course credit from another post-secondary  institution that fulfills the ‘Composition I' requirement 
  2. ACT English score of 34 or higher
  3. SAT EBRW score of 710 or higher
  4. AP English Language and Composition score of 4 or 5
  5. AP English Literature and Composition score of 4 or 5
  6. IB English A: Literature, Higher Level score of 6 or 7
  7. IB English A: Literature, Standard Level score of 6 or 7
  8. IB English A: Language and Literature, Higher Level score of 6 or 7
  9. IB English A: Language and Literature, Standard Level score of 6 or 7
  10. IB English A: Literature and Performance, Standard Level score of 6 or 7
  11. IB Film, Higher Level score of 6 or 7
  12. IB Film, Standard Level score of 6 or 7

(Please note, if you meet any of these criteria above, the scores must have been received by UIUC  and processed into RHET 105 credit so that it is reflected in your academic record before you may be exempt from the EPT)

If you are an undergraduate student and are required to take the English Placement Test (EPT), you can take the EPT to take ESL courses in Fall 2020.

Oral English Placement Test

If you are an undergraduate student and have not submitted any TOEFL or IELTS scores you may be required to also take the oral section of the EPT. This will be scheduled during the written portion of the exam.

On-campus/Online EPT

To learn about the procedure, required materials, and other information about the on-campus EPT, please read the On-campus EPT Guide (updated 5/3/2017). It is strongly advised that students take the test before the start of instruction to receive the results in time for class registration.

The only difference between the Online EPT and the on-campus EPT is the test delivery format. The grading criteria, required courses, and other administrative details are the same.

You will need your Illinois NET ID and AD Password to register for the test and to take the practice test.

Note that your practice EPT will not be rated and will not affect your EPT results. 

 

** A note on re-takes: Please note that re-taking the EPT is not permitted. If you have taken the EPT and have gotten results, you will have to complete any required courses based on these results. You may not take the EPT again.
